Building an Index

     Before you can use Free Text to navigate through a database, you have to index that database.  Index-building is an exceedingly simple process:  just click the “Build Index” button on the first card of this stack, select the file to index from the standard Macintosh files dialog, and then sit back and relax!  There is no need to reformat or pre-process your information, no need to arrange items into rows or columns, fields or zones, and no need to read through the database adding links or pointers by hand.  The computer does the work, not you.
 
     Every word processor has the ability to save files as plain-vanilla, standard ASCII text (sometimes called “Text Only”).  For your convenience, the first card of this stack provides buttons to join files together (“Append Files”), and to erase files (“Delete Files”), in addition to a button to create an index (“Build Index”).
